We went to Der Dutchmann on Tuesday. It is a "must-go-to" part of any trip to Columbus. The food is out of this world and generous. We all got the buffet. My favorite was the beef, which was very tender and shreddy and had a wonderful gravy. I usually have the broasted chicken but got so full on everything else I didn't have it this year. The only thing I didn't like was the cole slaw. I tried the potato salad and actually had a small second helping it was so good.
After that we went into the gift shop, where I bought a few things. The most frivolous was a cute nightlight with two snowmen roasting a marshmallow over a fire. Almost $20, and I almost walked away but...damn, I work hard for my money, I'm generally frugal, and you only live once. I'm so glad I treated myself to it and can't wait to put it out in December.
A short distance away is Yutzy's Farm and another Amish store. At one (I can't remember which) there is a thrift shop attached to the store that I always visit. I always find really good vintage things for about 1/10th what I'd pay here in NY. My favorite is a blue glass Mason jar. It's very old, I think. I have it in my office now with some crochet supplies in it.
We bought some spices, again for much, much cheaper than here. Mike bought doubles and gave half of them to Michael for his birthday. I picked up some chocolates for Dr. A. She just loves the ones I get from Ohio (and she was really, really happy when I gave them to her.) so I made it a point to get them. I also bought some "Whoopie Pies" as per a request from Katherine!
Mom bought a wheel of Ohio Longhorn Cheese for me and the kids. I have to give Katherine and Michael their shares--forgot last week!
Other than the great dinners we have with Mom, my favorite Ohio day is Der Dutchmann Day!
