Happy Halloween!

Shadow is a pretty good sport about 'dressing up.' This year, he was a squirrel!

ANOTHER MIRACLE!!!!

After a week... MELODY IS BACK! I only wish she could tell me where she has been. She is fat and healthy, so someone had to be feeding her. She only looks at me as if to ask what all the fuss is about.

We heard a thump and there she was on the deck, as if nothing had happened. Stupid cat. I love her so much, but she's stupid.

No news

Melody is still gone. It really is like she vanished into thin air.

Last night I saw a black cat and thought how some shelters will not adopt out black cats around Halloween. Sick to think there are weirdos out there who would hurt them. Wherever my Melody is, if she is alive, I hope she is okay.

And if I didn't say it in my last post, I hope she scratches the furniture and pees on the rug. And waffs up hairballs all  over the place. Especially in her kidnapper's bed.

I miss my pretty girl!

Sad about Melody

Melody, my cat, has vanished off the face of the earth. She is 7 years old, fixed, and NEVER wanders much more than to the yards adjacent to our own. She has never 'disappeared' for more than a few hours, and always shows up on our deck or at the front door.
But she has been gone for almost a week. This makes NO sense to me at all. If she was in a fight with a raccoon, another cat, or a car, where is her body?
Middle-aged cats don't just suddenly decide to go adventures, as far as I know. She was also healthy, having recently been to the vet for her checkup and shots. So she didn't go off somewhere to die.
Scenarios run through my head: she was hit by a drunk driver, who took her body to hide the evidence. She was 'cat-napped' by someone who is keeping her indoors. She did get in a fight with a raccoon, who dragged her into the nearby woods.
I have put up signs but only one very nice man called. It wasn't my cat, though. This one had gray in it.
I pray someone has my cat and is taking good care of her. I also pray they'll slip up and leave a door open, so my sweet baby will make her way home. But before she does that, I hope she scratches up all their furniture and throws up hairballs on their bed!
Meantime, I am keeping busy. I've heard of cats coming home after years and years--even across the country. There has to be hope, or we'd all go crazy.

Tuesday in Ohio

We went to Der Dutchmann on Tuesday. It is a "must-go-to" part of any trip to Columbus. The food is out of this world and generous. We all got the buffet. My favorite was the beef, which was very tender and shreddy and had a wonderful gravy. I usually have the broasted chicken but got so full on everything else I didn't have it this year. The only thing I didn't like was the cole slaw. I tried the potato salad and actually had a small second helping it was so good.

After that we went into the gift shop, where I bought a few things. The most frivolous was a cute nightlight with two snowmen roasting a marshmallow over a fire. Almost $20, and I almost walked away but...damn, I work hard for my money, I'm generally frugal, and you only live once. I'm so glad I treated myself to it and can't wait to put it out in December.

A short distance away is Yutzy's Farm and another Amish store. At one (I can't remember which) there is a thrift shop attached to the store that I always visit. I always find really good vintage things for about 1/10th what I'd pay here in NY. My favorite is a blue glass Mason jar. It's very old, I think. I have it in my office now with some crochet supplies in it.

We bought some spices, again for much, much cheaper than here. Mike bought doubles and gave half of them to Michael for his birthday. I picked up some chocolates for Dr. A. She just loves the ones I get from Ohio (and she was really, really happy when I gave them to her.) so I made it a point to get them. I also bought some "Whoopie Pies" as per a request from Katherine!

Mom bought a wheel of Ohio Longhorn Cheese for me and the kids. I have to give Katherine and Michael their shares--forgot last week!

Other than the great dinners we have with Mom, my favorite Ohio day is Der Dutchmann Day!

Ohio, October 2nd & 3rd

Okay, so October 2nd was Sunday and I swear I don't remember what we did that day. I'll have to ask Mike. He and I did go to Target to look for long-sleeved shirts. We packed both long and short, mostly short, because the weather on LI had been so nice. It was really cold in Ohio! I found just one sweater that fit me. After Target we just hit Taco Bell for a quick lunch.
Sunday night we had delicious ribs. Mom doesn't make them the way I do, but hers are really, really good, too. Mike practically devoured them.
On Monday, Mike went to a gym to work out and Mom and I went shopping, mostly to crafts stores. There is a Hobby Lobby there. We don't have it here on LI so it was fun to see 'different' things. I bought a boat load of yarn. Like I need more yarn, but hey, different brands, sale items...who could resist? We also went to Joanne's. I gave up before we went to Michael's, though. We have plenty of those right near me. (Our Joanne's is a forty-minute drive from my home.)
Monday night, I told Mom to take a break from cooking and we ordered pizza. Her grocery store, Giant Eagle, or something like that, has this whole food court thing going on. They actually hand-make pizza there, to order, in real pizza ovens. I gave it a thumb's up, even if no one can really compete with NY pizza.
Hard to believe that was almost 2 weeks ago. Tempus fugits quite a lot, especially the time between postings on blogs...

Ohio, October 1

I'm writing this more than  a week later but want to document my trip to Ohio with Mike.

We set out about 4:30 in the morning. We do this because it means there won't be as much traffic in NYC when we cross the George Washington Bridge.

This is the first year since we've had kids that we went by ourselves. None of the kids could get off from work, although Jamie said he would have come if he'd known about it. I would swear I told him. Then again, Nicky wasn't coming, so Jamie would probably have been bored most of the time. Who knows?

The weather and traffic held up for us, even with a bit of rain, and we made it in about 11 hours. We had expected to arrive at dinner time but got there by 3! Needless to say, Mom was surprised!

We had beef stroganoff for dinner and it was really delicious. There was also a salad with tomatoes from my mother's garden. She's a whiz at growing things. I did NOT inherit that gene.
