Rummy game

Uncle Jimmy told me he was lonely. I figured he meant he was bored, with only TV to watch. I wish I could have gone places with him, but between the snow and the icy cold, I wasn't going out! Then I remembered I had bought a deck of cards a while back. We sat down for about an hour for a nice game of Gin Rummy. I also found out he likes Yahtzee, so if he comes again we have that to do, too. He is leaving in a short while. I'm sure he will be happy to be back in his own home, and I will be happy to have my house back. And, even though they eventually go to the point of tolerance, Shadow will probably be glad when Julie is gone. Although I'm sure Julie will miss having a big back yard to run and play in! She really did love the snow!

Snow

We ended up with about 10 inches in our area. Sunny and bitterly, bitterly cold today. Last I looked it was around 16 degrees. Can't even imagine the wind chill. I am staying in like a hibernating bear. Uncle Jimmy is still here and going stir-crazy. I'm sure we will all be happy to be back to our old routines by the weekend.

I have been cleaning my office and I'd say I'm 95% done. I have too damned many projects going on.

Yet another blizzard, and a house guest

We're in the midst of our second snowstorm of the year. Last I heard they're expecting an average of 18 inches of snow. Katherine borrowed my car and is spending the night at the house of a friend who lives only 10 minutes from her job. I'm glad of that. I hate her driving late in bad weather, and this is supposed to last until tomorrow morning. Nick went in early today and will be out before his usual 10  p.m.

Mike's uncle Jimmy is staying with us for a few days. I'm not used to having people in the house, but it's working out okay. He had a back injury and is not supposed to be alone for a while. The woman who usually stays with him is having her own surgery, and John and Noreen had him last week. Mike's cousin, Robert, will be moving into Uncle Jimmy's apartment in a week or so, and then he will have someone to make sure he's okay.

Jimmy is 87 years old and has always been independent. But he fell and got a hairline fracture in his spine and had to have surgery to fix it. Now he is afraid to be alone and afraid of the dark. I told him he's probably not afraid of the dark but of what he can't see that might trip him up. Being old sucks, I think. At least his wits are pretty good although he keeps repeating himself.
Uncle Jimmy's dog Julie is here, too. She is a sweet, fluffy cocker-spaniel mix. At first, she and Shadow snarled and barked at each other, but now they can be in the same room with no problems. Julie is a city dog so having a big back yard to run around in (even in snow) makes her very happy. Here she is running across my deck to the back door. You can see the snow is about 3 inches at this point (5 p.m.) and it's still falling.

The cats, for the record, are keeping a respectable distance. We are keeping Julie leashed when the ferret comes out, for the safety of both animals. I let Julie sniff Rocky last night before he went in this cage. She went nuts, running around the house trying to find Rocky! I bet she has never met a ferret and wonders what on earth it is!

Blizzard!

We got the first big snowstorm of 2014 overnight. It started about 6 p.m. yesterday and just finished a short while ago. It was definitely a blizzard, with high winds up to 50 mph. I think we got 6-8 inches, although the wind made higher drifts.

Of course, we had to take care of our backyard friends!

This little guy is sitting in a pot (where I have tulips planted!) that is about 8 inches deep. He looks like he's digging himself out of an avalanche!

My mom celebrated her 91st birthday yesterday. We had a nice conversation on the phone. She told me a neighbor shoveled out her driveway. She opened the door and told him, "I'm 91 years old today and this is the best present I've got!" She can't drive now but has plenty of friends to take her places. She's slowing down, with failing eyesight and hearing, but her brain is still pretty sharp. Hope I'm like that if I live to be 91!

Christmas Day 2013

We went to John and Noreen's house for Christmas Dinner. They made prime ribs and, oh my gosh, the gravy was the best I've ever tasted! They always make such good dinners on holidays!

We gave them a gift card and we gave John Joseph a big bag full of toys and books. He really enjoyed them!

Christmas Eve Party

Janelle, Katherine, Angelina play 'Rock Band'

Enjoying good food and friends

Mike might be thinking about the scungilli he's going to cook!

Our other guests were Theresa (Angelina's mother), Mike's friend Jimmy and Janelle's friend who's name I forget. And we had a surprise visitor--my little raccoon stopped by to say 'hello'! The kids all got a big kick out of her.

Decorating the Tree

Nick was at work. We put the tree up the Sunday before Christmas. The kids did 99% of the work!
