Yet another blizzard, and a house guest

We're in the midst of our second snowstorm of the year. Last I heard they're expecting an average of 18 inches of snow. Katherine borrowed my car and is spending the night at the house of a friend who lives only 10 minutes from her job. I'm glad of that. I hate her driving late in bad weather, and this is supposed to last until tomorrow morning. Nick went in early today and will be out before his usual 10  p.m.

Mike's uncle Jimmy is staying with us for a few days. I'm not used to having people in the house, but it's working out okay. He had a back injury and is not supposed to be alone for a while. The woman who usually stays with him is having her own surgery, and John and Noreen had him last week. Mike's cousin, Robert, will be moving into Uncle Jimmy's apartment in a week or so, and then he will have someone to make sure he's okay.

Jimmy is 87 years old and has always been independent. But he fell and got a hairline fracture in his spine and had to have surgery to fix it. Now he is afraid to be alone and afraid of the dark. I told him he's probably not afraid of the dark but of what he can't see that might trip him up. Being old sucks, I think. At least his wits are pretty good although he keeps repeating himself.
Uncle Jimmy's dog Julie is here, too. She is a sweet, fluffy cocker-spaniel mix. At first, she and Shadow snarled and barked at each other, but now they can be in the same room with no problems. Julie is a city dog so having a big back yard to run around in (even in snow) makes her very happy. Here she is running across my deck to the back door. You can see the snow is about 3 inches at this point (5 p.m.) and it's still falling.

The cats, for the record, are keeping a respectable distance. We are keeping Julie leashed when the ferret comes out, for the safety of both animals. I let Julie sniff Rocky last night before he went in this cage. She went nuts, running around the house trying to find Rocky! I bet she has never met a ferret and wonders what on earth it is!
